Spartan Wrestling History

Norfolk State University’s wrestling program boasts a distinguished legacy, highlighted by multiple championship teams and individual standouts from the 1960s through the 1990s. James Lee was pivotal in the 1960s, capturing four CIAA titles and becoming NSU’s first All-American. The 1970s saw the team claim its first CIAA Team Championships, with Adrian Dance earning individual honors. In the 1980s, wrestlers like Tim Bonds—NSU’s only four-time CIAA champion and first four-time NCAA qualifier—and producing several All-Americans including Anthony Harris, Ira Cheatham, Mike Wood, Kirwyn Adderley and Jonell Gainey. The program achieved top 20 NCAA team finishes in 1986, 1988, and 1989. 

The 1990s continued this excellence with Jonell Gainey, Charles Daniels, James Hayes, and Corey Williams earning Southern Regional and NCAA qualifications, as well as All-American honors. NSU finished in the NCAA top 20 in 1994 and 1995. The All-Time Team includes many multi-time champions and qualifiers. James Lee and Kirwyn Adderley have been inducted into the NSU Hall of Fame, cementing their legacies as program legends.
