
Spartan Wrestling History
Norfolk State University’s wrestling program has a distinguished history marked by championship success, nationally recognized athletes, and sustained excellence from the 1960s through the 1990s. The program consistently produced conference champions, NCAA qualifiers, and All-Americans, establishing NSU as a respected competitor in collegiate wrestling.
1960–1969:
The 1960s marked the formative era of the Norfolk State wrestling program. During this decade, Dr. William H. Wright( Coach) and James Lee (Wrestler/Coach) emerged as a cornerstones of the program, Lee capturing four CIAA championships and setting the competitive standard for future Spartan wrestlers. Dr. Wright setting the foundational for coaching excellence for all future NSU coaches.
In 1968, NSU celebrated its first NCAA All-American, a pivotal milestone that elevated the program’s national profile. Additional achievements during this period included an NCAA runner-up finish and participation in the U.S. Olympic Trials, reflecting the program’s early rise and competitive promise. Dr. Wright and James Lee both are Norfolk State Hall of Fame inductees in the class 2009.
1970–1979:
The 1970s were defined by significant program growth and team success. Under the leadership of Coach Earl Powell, Norfolk State secured its first CIAA Team Championship in 1977. That achievement earned Powell CIAA Coach of the Year honors, and the Spartans followed with a second team title in 1979.
This era also produced standout individual performances from Ken Moddy 158 and Robert Bell 126 both winning three consecutive CIAA individual championships from 1975-1977. Adrian Dance, continued the championship earning multiple CIAA final appearances and Dance’s 1977 title at 138 pounds further solidified NSU’s reputation for competitive excellence.
1980–1989:
Between 1980 and 1986, James Lee served as head coach, guiding NSU to recurring CIAA titles and strong NCAA performances. In 1980, Anthony Harris earned All-American status with an eighth-place national finish at 190 pounds.
Tim Bonds became NSU’s second four-time CIAA champion (1982–1986) and its first four-time NCAA qualifier. Norfolk State delivered an exceptional showing at the 1986 CIAA Championships, capturing six individual titles and earning the program’s first NCAA top-20 team finishThe decade featured dominant performances across multiple weight classes, including titles by Ira Cheatham, Mike Wood, Kirwyn Adderley, Vincent Brothers, and William Martin.
Followed up with 1987 three Individual CIAA In Championships Ira Cheatham, Ray Harris and Mike Wood.
Momentum continued in 1987 under Coach Mike Wood, with Kirwyn Adderley and Johnell Gainey securing CIAA championships and national recognition and Adderley becoming an All-American placing 6th place at 134 lb weight class.
Under Coach Jackson Gerst in 1989, NSU achieved another top-20 NCAA team finish, with three CIAA Champions - Kirwyn Adderley, Johnell Gainey and Alan Whitney. Johnell Gainey placing sixth nationally and Kirwyn Adderley finishing second Adderley was selected to compete in the NCAA Division I Championships. That season marked the program’s first participation in NCAA Division I Championships by both a coach and athlete.
1990–1996:
The 1990s maintained the program’s championship standard under Coach Jackson Gerst, with Kirwyn Adderley serving as assistant coach. Johnell Gainey won CIAA championships in 1990 and Southern Regional 1991 and earned his second NCAA All-American status in 1991. 1992 Future All Americans James Hayes and Charles Daniels qualified for the their first NCAA tournament.
1993- The Spartans dominated the state of Virginia winning the state Division 2 & Division 3 schools team championship. Coach Gerst was named the Coach of Year in 1993. The team also qualified 5 wrestlers to the NCAA tournament - Kyle Cowles, Corey Williams, Charles Daniels, Dentron Eason and James Hayes.
1994 NSU captured 3 Southern Regional Champions Corey Williams, Charles Daniels and James Hayes leading NSU to another top 20 finish. Charles Daniels and James Hayes both became All-Americans 1994.
1995 Corey Williams and Charles continued their dominance as Southern Regional Champions and both earning All- American status. The 1995 Team another top 20 finish and the highest at the NCAA's in NSU's history.
1996 -Corey Williams finished the regular season undefeated becoming the 4th and final Spartan to accomplish that feat. Joining James Lee, Ira Cheatham and Kirwyn Adderley in this elite accomplishment. Williams was unable to attend the NCAA's his senior year due to Norfolk State transition from Division 2 to Division 1.

NSU All-Time Team
The NSU All-Time Team recognizes individuals who made lasting contributions to the program: James Lee, Ken Moddy, Robert Bell, Tim Bonds, Ira Cheatham, Anthony Harris, Mike Wood, Kirwyn Adderley, Johnell Gainey, Charles Daniels, Corey Williams, James Hayes, William Martin.
Several athletes, including Charles Daniels, James Hayes, Kirwyn Adderley, Johnell Gainey, and Mike Wood, qualified for the NCAA Championships in multiple weight classes during their careers. Tim Bonds, Corey Williams, Charles Daniels and Johnell Gainey qualified for the NCAA tournament every season they were eligible. Johnell Gainey is the only Spartan to All-American in two different weight classes
